Tran
Sets New Personal Best Time And Is Top Qualifier In Oregon
08-26-2003
Dallas Texas- Kenny Tran's Quaker State® racing team raised
the performance level of the Quaker State® Honda Civic to new
levels during qualifying at the Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon this
weekend. Tran's new personal best time of 8.56@169mph pass was enough
to clinch the top qualifier spot for the team and secured bonus
to assist in the chase for the 2003 NHRA championship.

Unfortunately
Tran's progress in the elimination rounds was halted when a differential
broke as Tran launched in a second round race against Mopar's Mike Crawford.
"The car was working really well." Tran said. "We had the
car glued to the track and it was just a matter of going rounds to pick
up more points. I was very disappointed when the differential broke in
the second round. I really felt that we could have won this race."
Despite the
disappointing result in eliminations Tran remains optimistic about his
chances in the charge towards the championship.
"We have got as much or more horsepower than any of our rivals. Our
problems are entirely related to the durability of the stock Honda transmissions
that we have to use. We have decided to head back to Houston, Texas to
install and test some new parts that have arrived this week from Australia
that may help us out."
He went on:
"If we are successful at the tests I think we can still change our
chances and give the Mopar and GM teams a real fight for the title during
the last three rounds of the season." The final three races of the
2003 season will be at San Francisco, Englishtown and Pomona and team
tuner Bob Norwood is confident of running down the opposition.
"We all know that we can run with anyone out there." He explained.
"The automatic- equipped factory cars have an advantage in terms
of durability and consistency but we have got the edge on outright performance.
We need to strengthen our transmissions to eliminate the breakages and
hopefully the new parts will help us out. We won't really know until we
complete our test this weekend but I am optimistic."
The Quaker
State® Team is currently lying in third place in the championship
well within striking distance of the leaders.
